This is exactly what Nomura wants to emphasize most about him. Part of what I like about Sora is that he's just a random kid, the runner up, the second best, being told that constantly and having it reinforced all the time. He still wasn't strong enough to stand on his own, needing ventus' help to keep his heart from drowning. I mean, there's been hidden darkness in his character since KH2 and the anti-form along with all the absolute burning rage he has for the organization members, which is part of what made it plausible for the plot of 3D to happen in the first place. I want to see that depth and nuance to his character again, and hopefully with some maturity added in too. In DDD, it's like the writers picked only a few of those traits and were like "this is Sora." When earlier, there was so much more to him. He's cockier than he was in KH1, he's friendly and gregarious, he's openly emotional, especially when he's sad, he's a hopeless romantic, he's always excited about meeting people and experiencing new things, he gets frustrated with the Org XIII members for messing with his head and calling him Roxas, he's incredibly sassy, he experiences doubt and despair (well, until Donald and Goofy cheer him up), he may not be as smart as Goofy but he does have a lot of emotional intelligence (like he doesn't trust people who don't deserve it), etc., etc. That being said, I like him in KH2 the best because he has such a clearly defined personality in that game. He seems like a real person, like you might actually know someone like him in real life. The writing for his character is, IMO, at its best in KH1 and CoM/Re:CoM, as he gets a clear character arc in both games and shows a wide range of emotion. I'm hoping he's hiding his pain behind a happy mask, otherwise he's lost a lot of the emotional depth and nuance he had earlier and has become more of an cutout than a character. I think a lot of the criticism for his character is because of DDD, where he bounces back surprisingly quickly from some pretty traumatic stuff. He's my favorite KH character, for what it's worth. So it really depends on which group of fans you're talking to. In a recent Famitsu feature, he won the most popular male character poll. Sora's still wildly popular with the Japanese fans.
