Whereas the âtrâ command transforms the white spaces with a newline to allow the âgrepâ utility to search the specified pattern from each line of the file. The âwcâ command returns the total count of the matched pattern from an entire file. The Linux â grepâ command is utilized with the â wc(word count)â and â tr(translates)â options to count the total number of occurrences of the word/pattern. The searched word âLinuxâ occurrence in a âSampleFile.txtâ file is â5â. A common way to get context about howor whya pattern appears in a file is to view the line above the match, or the line just.
